Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA's) were originally designed as a plan set up for the benefit of a person to save for retirement. Although IRA's are an excellent tool for retirement, the original design has been expanded to also allow saving for education, medical expenses, or a first-time home purchase. Unlike most investments, depending on the type of IRA you choose, contributions may be tax deductible and will grow either tax-deferred or tax-free.
