Star of Excellence Award
12 February 2009Lawrence Bank presents Star of Excellence |
LAWRENCE, KS - Lawrence Bank is proud to announce Dan Affalter as the latest recipient of its "Star of Excellence Award." He's being acknowledged for over 30 years of service with the Lawrence Police Department, retiring as Captain, as well as for his many volunteer commitments.
A prime example of Dan’s involvement can be seen through his efforts for the Lawrence Hunter’s Education Program, through the Kansas Wildlife and Parks organization. “Teaching safe hunting procedures to first time hunters has been a lot of fun, I love the look on a young person’s face after a successful hunt,” Dan commented. The program is locally sponsored by the Fraternal Order of the Police, Quail Unlimited, Friends of the NRA, the Wild Turkey Federation and Wal-Mart. Dan has served as the regional coordinator for the program since 1999.
He's also on the board of directors for Shelter Inc., which provides adoption services for foster families in Lawrence. Dan has also worked as a troop leader with the boy scouts of America since 1994 and has enjoyed helping many young men learn survival skills during one of his many trips which include outings to Canada, Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Missouri. Recently, Dan was one of five finalists for the Fraternal Order of Police’s Member of the Year Award. “Everyone is capable of helping someone and Lawrence is blessed to have lots of people willing to help out. It makes us all better,” Dan said.
Dan’s family has always played an important role in his life. His wife, Dianne currently works at Lawrence High in the enrollment department and she also is very active in their baseball and booster programs and volunteers at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Dan has three children. His son, Danny, is currently serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. His daughter, Sarah, after spending time with Kansas State’s Air Force ROTC program will be beginning flight school in San Antonio in May. His youngest daughter, Katie, currently works in banking and hopes to further her career in the banking industry.
In asking Dan why he spends so much of his time helping others, he commented, "Being on-call for the police while raising three kids kept me really busy, but I always made time to do what I thought was right. I’ve always done what needed to be done while trying to have fun with it. I've seen a lot over the years working for the police and it has been helpful to see good people doing good things for our community. As busy as people are, you should always make time to help your community."
