LAWRENCE, KS - Lawrence Bank is proud to announce Dr. Robert Hemenway as its latest recipient of the Star of Excellence Award.
Throughout his 14-year career as Chancellor for the University of Kansas, Dr. Hemenway demonstrated a passionate commitment to the Lawrence community. Always recognizing the university’s impact on the city of Lawrence, he stated, "A bond is shared by the citizens of Lawrence that emerges from a strong community spirit derived from the passion for the university. Lawrence is a special place to live and work and we all gain by having the university in our city."
When presented with the Star of Excellence Award, Dr. Hemenway stated, "I am the beneficiary of a loving wife and children and it is a great honor to be recognized with the past recipients of this award. We take a lot for granted being able to live and work in a great city like Lawrence. The people who have won this award in the past have all improved the city. What Lawrence Bank is doing to recognize these people is a great thing and is another reason why Lawrence is a great place to be."
After stepping down from the chancellor position, Dr. Hemenway has plenty to keep him busy - from his various public speaking appearances, to his new book, new home, new office and new responsibilities. He's also enjoying more time with his wife and staying connected to his eight children.
He will soon be traveling to Winston-Salem to be a guest speaker at The Big Read that is in honor of Zora Neale Hurston, author of Their Eyes Were Watching God on September 12th. His speech will display his passion for African American Literature and the work of Hurston and her impact on American literature. Dr. Hemenway has a published biography on Hurston that has been in circulation for over 30 years and he's currently in the research phase on a new book about American values and intercollegiate athletics.
In asking him about new Chancellor Gray-Little he stated, "She will be recognized as a premier executive in the country. The university has gained a wonderful addition and there is no question we are all under excellent leadership from the new chancellor."
